by Bret Joorsen

When the storm hit, something else followed it.

Living alone in the remote South African Mountains, Craig Farrant wanted nothing more than peace and separation from his fractured past. Then, after a violent thunderstorm, a curious object crashes on Craig’s land and shatters his tranquil life. Abducted and imprisoned by a secretive biotech corporation, Craig discovers that whatever landed wasn't just unearthly, it's become a part of him. Unknowingly, it's the key to either his salvation or destruction.

Escaping into the wild, hunted and outnumbered, Craig teams up with Margie, an old friend with secrets of her own. But the organisation pursuing them has roots that run deep, far deeper than either of them realise.

Back in 1941

A covert Nazi landing on the South African coast sets in motion a secret project centred on a mysterious artefact salvaged from an ancient wreck. What begins as a research experiment spirals into bloodshed, betrayal, and horror, birthing a brutal legacy that survives generations.

Past and present collide.

Lives in the balance, Craig and Margie must uncover the truth behind the decades old experiment, before the organisation catches them… and unleashes something beyond anyone's control

“

Still hunched over, memories came flooding back; the helicopter and 4x4’s, suited thugs at his house, the autoinjector’s sting and with that realised he’d been drugged. Reflexively rubbing at the spot on his neck, it had to have been a really fast-acting knock out drug because he’d had no time to react before every sense was overwhelmed.

“What the hell is this all about?” He began angrily, but the one who’d sounded Russian raised a hand. “Calm down and don’t do anything stupid. There’s no point in making this really unpleasant for yourself.” Then pointing toward the cot. “Shut up and sit down.” Outgunned Craig complied, backing up and sitting on the cot edge.

With morbid fascination, unable to drag his eyes from the entity that had overtaken him, Craig stared unblinkingly. Being infested by such a weirdly foreign presence he should have felt violated but didn’t and in fact, other than his prevailing circumstances, felt really good.

Struggling to keep his cool, stifling the urge to lash out Koch cut in. “Inconsequential they aren’t like us; it was either that native or one of your own men, surely you must see that. You have a job to do here, one that’s vital to the Reich and with no room for maudlin sentimentality.”

Stepping over and around dead men to climb the craft access stairs, van Heerden paused on the upper landing, unable to shake a growingly acute sense of being under constant scrutiny. Survival instinct kicked in; it was time to go.

Born and raised in South Africa, Bret Joorsen became an all-round outdoorsman, either spending time in the veld or spearfishing and scuba diving. Following a stint in the military, he studied construction management and established a career in the industry. Married, with four children, he and wife Lisa now live in England with Trixie their Jack Russell, Kiki an African Grey parrot and several crazy moggies. Bret and Lisa spend their limited leisure time travelling, sightseeing in Britain and Europe, or simply walking Trixie in the English countryside.

The Covid lockdown afforded Bret the opportunity to fulfil a long-held desire of writing a book, resulting in his debut novel "Firefly". Returning to work in the construction field delayed the release of "Firefly", until a period of ill health eventually provided the opportunity to complete it.

Bret blends his interests in science, history, and the metaphysical into his story, maintaining plausibility and blurring the line between reality and fiction.
